An ongoing project
What the Shell Filters is a new body of work currently in development.
Over the coming months, this page will evolve alongside the project, with new images, research, sketches, and glimpses into the making of the series.
The work will be presented at Greig Farm (Red Hook, New York) from October 14 to December 14, 2026.

Some creatures are often overlooked because of their size and perceived insignificance. Yet within
ecosystems, they are essential.
Beetles are a great example.
They break down matter, nourish soil, and sustain balance.
They are resilient, adaptable, and protected by a carapace that both shields and defines
them.
I am drawn to this tension between fragility and strength.
Through these works, I use the beetle as a metaphor for presences that sustain systems while remaining largely unnoticed. The beetle becomes both an ecological figure and personal metaphor: small, often unseen, yet vital to the larger system.
As an immigrant navigating questions of visibility and belonging, I am increasingly aware of how being present does not always mean being recognized.

Algunas criaturas suelen pasar desapercibidas por su tamaño y por la aparente falta de importancia que les damos. Sin embargo, dentro de los ecosistemas, son esenciales.
Los escarabajos son un gran ejemplo.
Descomponen la materia, nutren el suelo y ayudan a mantener el equilibrio.
Son resilientes, adaptables y están protegidos por un caparazón que al mismo tiempo los resguarda y los define.
Me atrae esa tensión entre fragilidad y fuerza.
A través de estas obras, utilizo al escarabajo como una metáfora de aquellas presencias que sostienen sistemas enteros mientras permanecen, en gran parte, desapercibidas. El escarabajo se convierte tanto en una figura ecológica como en una metáfora personal: pequeño, muchas veces invisible, pero vital para el sistema que lo rodea.
Como inmigrante, navegando preguntas de visibilidad y pertenencia, soy cada vez más consciente de que estar presente no siempre significa ser reconocido.
